Zagros mountain range is the second highest in Iran and presents a natural barrier for Bakhtiari nomads on their seasonal migration between their winter and summer settlements in Khuzestan and Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari/Isfahan provinces. Many of the nomads seasonally settle inside the mountains and their tents can be found scattered all around the Poshtkuh area. The area is also famous for some of the most beautiful villages in Iran that nomads from the past decided to permanently settle in. In our 3-day Zagros Nomadic Tour we will show you a little bit of everything in the Poshtkuh area – we will visit nomads and sleep in their tent to witness traditional Bakhtiari way of life, we will visit the museum and Eco centre Khoye to see how a group of enthusiasts run a sustainable tourism project of preserving the nomadic tradition and we will hike pass the waterfall and salt mine to reach the exotic village Sar Agha Seyed.
In the morning we leave Isfahan and drive to Chelgerd. Driving with a local minibus that connects villages will be an experience for itself. In the afternoon we will reach the family of nomads that will host us for the night. We will use our time with them to witness their daily routine of collecting wood, gathering and milking sheep and preparing a fire for making bread. The night we sleep in the million stars hotel or inside the nomadic tent.
In the morning we go to the village Khoye where we visit the nomadic museum and have lunch on one of the roofs of the typical Bakhtiari stepped village. In the afternoon at the beginning of our hike towards the picturesque village of Sar Agha Seyed, we stop by a waterfall that fiercely comes running out of the cliffs. We will climb the mountain and walk down the other side to reach the salt mine local people have been using for centuries. The evening we will use for photographing and getting lost in steep alleys of the village many consider to be the most beautiful in Iran. Dinner and sleep in Sar Agha Seyed in a guesthouse or on one of the typical village roofs.
Early in the morning with the local minibus we will come back to Chelgerd, have breakfast and then come back to Isfahan.
We stumbled upon nomad tours by chance and we didn’t regret it. We had a wonderful time in the 3 day tour – nomad villages, accompanied by lovely Fariba, our tour guide.
In this remote villages they are trying susteinable tourism, to minimize the impact of tourists but to help the community in the same time. It is a hard job, but I think they are managing it wisely.
What to expect: a lot of smiles, wonderful scenery, good and simple food.
Breakfast in Khoye with the homemade milk products was divine.
It is good to know that you’ll be in a village where there is no hotel, you will sleep at the locals as the locals, on the floor, eating the same food.
Let yourself enjoy their way of life!
