Adventurous Tour

Live like a Nomad and celebrate cultural diversity! During this cultural and natural trip, you will have a first-hand experience of KOOCH (Migrating on foot with a flock of sheep & goats, with the sounds of their bells in your ears) with traditional Nomads. You will inhabit as a nomad in the heart of Zagros Mountains.

Bakhtiari Nomads

In the southern part of Iran, in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, lives a very special community of people who migrate (Lori dialect: ‘kooch’) twice a year in Zagros hinterlands. They do it on foot like their 10000-year-old ancestors to provide their animals with grass. ‘Kooch’ is the epitome of their unique lifestyle, in which they move with their livestock and carry all their belongings. They used to count over 500000 and millions of animals – but nowadays there is only about 200000 left who still live the ancient way of life.

They are Bakhtiari people – the children of Zagros.

Iran Nomads

Nomads of Iran are the indigenous people of Iran who have their origin in 8000-10000 years ago. They are independent, hard-working people who have chosen to be on the move to make a living. There are estimated to be around 1.5 million nomads living in Iran today, although the figure is gradually decreasing. Iran has many nomadic tribes. One of the most well-known nomadic groups is the Bakhtiari tribe.

Words are incapable of describing such a fantastic experience; To sense it deeper, please watch this short video:

‘Authentic’ is ridiculously overused. But here, it is apt. This was a trip to landscape, culture, scenery, and tradition. Be ready to be awed.

Day 1: Joining the Nomad Family

Starting from 8:00 .A.M from Isfahan. In the evening we will join the nomad tribe near Lebd village and will eat dinner with them.

Transportation: 4WD car

Day 2, 3 & 4: Hiking and Accompanying the Nomad family during their Seasonal Migration

Please note that although these days have an overall plan and overview, but we cannot provide you neither with the nomads phone number nor with the exact route they are taking. Because they choose their path according to the instant weather and the condition of their flocks and sheep. The meals would be mostly from the dairy products and sometimes it will include fresh meat. They are mostly simple, but we can carry more food in case you prefer any special diet. We provide camping tent beside nomad family for 2nd and 3rd night. We spend the 4th night in Sar Agha Seyed village.

Transportation: Nomads’ mules carry our lodging but they could support up to 5 kilograms for each person so we do recommend to not bring heavy backpack. Our extra stuffs which we don’t need during the trekking days can be put in the car.

Day 5: To Isfahan

Today we will visit Sar agha seyed, an ancient and emblematic village where nomads used to rest after they long migration for millennia. A salt mine nearby and will have lunch at the rural residence there. Then will ride to Baznavid village. Visiting some villages such as Kelose and waterfalls of Pashand on the way, continuing the way toward Isfahan or Tehran.

Transportation: 4WD car

Group Traveller

Me and my friend Paul had the chance to participate in a nomad migration with the help from the amazing nomad tours team. We had a really spontaneous request but still they found a way to manage everything. They picked us up and from the beginning it was not a typical payed touristic tour it felt like going to an adventure with friends. The tour itself is simply amazing because you will have the chance to take part in the life of migrating (not settled!) Bakthiari nomads which is really special. You follow the animals, experience unbelievable beautiful nature in the Zagros Mountains and you can observe and take part in their daily lifestyle. Making bread, yogurt, milking the goats, getting water and firewood and sleep under the stars. I really appreciate also the way the tour is organized because the family don’t get intefluenced in their traditional lifestyle during the tour. We are vegetarian and also this was no problem ! Our guide Mohammed (who is an excellent off the beaten track driver :D) even showed us the unique village of Sar-Agha-Seyed and cared for our special wishes, we even could watch woman weaving amazing carpets and making handicrafts. Also he has excellent knowledge about the nomads and the mountains ,I hope we can go again on kooch and see the very valuable tradition of the Bakhtiari nomads!
